My Samsung phone is hacked – What should I do?

Samsung is, by far, the most popular manufacturer of smartphones. Chances are if you don't have an Apple device, you have a Samsung. In Q1 2019, they had around 23% of the world's smartphone market share, compared to Apple's 11.8%.

So we thought it would be an excellent idea to help you work out how to fix your hacked Samsung phone and keep it safe in the future!

How to detect and remove viruses on Samsung phones

Use Safe Mode

If you think you have a virus, the first thing you should do is to restart your phone in Safe Mode. This is a setting that temporarily disables all of the third party apps that you have installed on your device. If the problems are gone once you turn on safe mode, it's very likely that an app is causing it. This will allow you to restart your phone as normal and remove any recently installed apps one-by-one to determine which is causing the problem.

Once the start up animation begins to play – hold down the volume DOWN button.
When the phone finishes loading to the lock screen, "Safe mode" will be displayed in the lower left corner of the screen.

If you can't fix the issue using Safe Mode, the next step is to use the antivirus scanner built into all of Samsung's devices. This will allow you to scan your device and detect any malware installed onto the device.

Tap 'Device Care' (Also called 'Device Maintenance' on some models).
Tap 'Device Security'.
Tap 'Scan Phone'.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

How to keep your Samsung phone secure in future

In order to avoid getting a virus in future, there are a few best practices that you should follow:

Use a security app. Whether that's the Samsung app or our app, Certo Mobile Security, just make sure you use something to regularly check your device.

Keep your phone updated. Samsung regularly releases updates for your device that contain fixes for bugs that can cause security vulnerabilities in your system.
Use a strong passcode. For your lock screen, combine a strong passcode with fingerprint or facial recognition if available on your device.
Only install apps from trusted sources. Only install apps from Google Play or the Galaxy store.
Block unsafe or annoying ads. Some ads can lead to viruses if you click on them. Keep yourself safe by using the in-built ad-blocker on the Samsung internet app.
Use Samsung Pass. This will allow you to use your fingerprint or facial recognition data to log into accounts instead of passwords.
Use Secure Folder. This will allow you to keep your files and data secure from prying eyes.
Don't click suspicious links. Some links can look realistic but will lead you to websites trying to steal your data or install malicious software on your device. Be careful about what you click when you're using the internet.
Don't root your device. You may be tempted to root your device to unlock certain features. Unless you are very experienced, then you should not do this as it will seriously weaken the security of your device.
